What makes Jeondong Cathedral especially fascinating is the story behind it. In 1791, during the Sinhae Persecution, Yun Ji-chung (Paul) and Gwon Sang-yeon (James) were executed here. This made the area the first Catholic martyrdom site in Korea. Later, in 1891, the French priest Baudenet purchased the land and began plans to build a church here to honor the 100th anniversary of their martyrdom. As a result, the cathedral is not only a beautiful building, but also a meaningful place of faith and remembrance.

The cathedral itself is widely admired for its architecture. It was designed by Father Poisnel, who also designed Myeongdong Cathedral in Seoul. The building combines Romanesque and Byzantine styles, creating a grand yet elegant appearance. Its rounded arches, impressive bell tower, and dome give it a unique charm, while the mix of red and gray bricks adds to its warm and distinctive beauty. Jeondong Cathedral is often mentioned together with Myeongdong Cathedral in Seoul and Gyesan Cathedral in Daegu as one of the three most beautiful cathedrals in Korea.

Another meaningful detail is that some of the cathedral’s foundation stones were taken from the old fortress wall near Pungnammun Gate, the very place where the martyrs were executed. This connection gives the site an even deeper sense of history.
